Central Anatolian sites database: 9th - 6th millennia cal BC

Data compiled by Frederic GERARD
Last updated: 26/03/2001

Preliminary note
This sites database should not be considered as exhaustive, but as a presentation of all known sites within the limits of the Central Anatolian hydrological basin, except the ones the coordinates of which are not known. Surface areas are to be taken as estimations only, even if they look like precise measures. Sites are numbered (Damsa (6) for instance), except for the excavated ones plus Hacıbeyli and Ilıcapınar, that are used as landmarks. Names and numbers relate to the CANeW Geoarchaeological maps. All sites are presented in alphabetical order according to their geographical region. Note that the TAY Project publications (Harmankaya et al. 1997; ibid. 1998 and tayproject.eies.itu.edu.tr) were used in establishing this database. References point to the first publication mentioning the site, and to those discussing the site more extensively. Also here, a full bibliography is not aimed at.

ECA - Early Central Anatolia

The Chronological attribution is done according to the CANeW working consensus on a regional chronology for Central Anatolia. The chronological scheme for ECA is subdivided in the following periods:

ECA I: end Pleistocene (?) - late 8th mill. cal BC (= ACN Aceramic Neolithic, or AEN Aceramic Early Neolithic)

ECA II: late 8th mill. cal BC - c. 6700/6600 cal BC (= EPN Early Pottery Neolithic)

ECA III: 6700/6600 - 6000 cal BC (= LN Late Neolithic)

ECA IV: 6000 - 5500 cal BC (= ECh Early Chalcolithic)

ECA V: 5500 - c. 4000 cal BC (= MCh Middle Chalcolithic)
