Step 1 : Presentation

The "Central Anatolian Neolithic e-Workshop" is an archaeological project on Internet, set up to debate some specific issues concerning the prehistory of Central Anatolia. The workshop made use of a private discussion list of scholars preliminary to an international "Table Ronde" that was held on 23-24 November 2001 in Istanbul (Turkey) on :

The Neolithic of Central Anatolia, internal developments and external relations during the 9th - 6th millennia cal BC

Aims of the Workshop:

To establish a geo-archaeological map of Central Anatolia by combining the physical and hydrological data with archaeological site distribution patterns on the 9000-5000 cal BC time frame;

to reach a working consensus on absolute chronology for Central Anatolia, combining the available 14C and dendrochronological evidence; and to set up an extensive and detailed 14C data base, which will be accessible for researchers in the field of study;

to reach a working consensus on the nature/validity and the use of labels, such as 'PPNB', 'Aceramic', 'Mesolithic', 'Epipalaeolithic', 'Early Neolithic', 'Late Neolithic', 'Early Chalcolithic', 'Middle Chalcolithic', etc.;

to debate aspects of cultural homogeneity and change in Central Anatolia during the period of study, and to find explanations for these aspects;

to discuss the extend and degree of contacts and/or cultural barriers of Central Anatolia with adjoining regions, including Southeast Anatolia, the Middle Euphrates, the northern Levant, Cilicia, the Lakes Region (Göller Bölgesi), Aegean Anatolia and Northwest Anatolia); and to establish their diachronic evolution for the time span concerned.
